Ophthalmology
Charting the history of the Department of Ophthalmology at Yonsei University, one can trace the history of ophthalmology in Korea.
The first ophthalmology treatment in Korea was performed in 1908 by a member of our university’s first graduating class, Dr.
Hong Seok-Hoo.
The department was the first department to focus on a specialized field in Korea, and has been devoted to a range of research, treatments, educational activities based on a high level of expertise.
With the opening of the first ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology hospital in 1996, our department took a leading role in the field of study.
The establishment of our department changed perceptions about ophthalmology in the medical field in Korea, and the hospital has become a prestigious international institution.
In addition, the Institute of Vision Research is pursuing a range of basic and clinical research for diseases causing visual impairment and studies on diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
The Department of Ophthalmology will strive to become an internationally recognized institution that offers the best treatment, research and education while conducting research on the rehabilitation and the visual environment improvement of people with low vision impairments, as well as ophthalmic diseases.
